How to train your dog the collar grab. It is very important for your puppy to feel comfortable with being caught or grabbed when loose. At some point in your puppy’s life, he might be loose and someone might be trying to catch him, if he got lost for example. A lot of dogs without previous training, will be scared if a stranger tries to grab at their neck or harness and will run away, making it very hard to catch the dog, and potentially dangerous. Other dogs might bite the person’s hand out of fear.
We can teach puppies and dogs to feel comfortable and trust us when we grab their collar.
If your dog is aggressive, has bitten, doesn’t like being touched, or you are simply worried to touch the dog’s collar, get help from a professional dog trainer who uses positive reinforcement first.

July 5, 2020I am trying to watch this video (that I've seen a few times) but there is a 40 minute advertisement about Dr. Goldstein that I can't skip. Hmm. I wonder what's going on?

July 5, 2020I just taught this to my dog. I can't believe how easy it was to do and how useful it is and how fun it was to teach really. It actually works just as well if the dog is really, really comfortable on a couch 🙂

July 5, 2020I met a kid (he is 32) that grabbed my buddies dog by the back of the neck and forced it to the ground (so the dogs head and four legs were pinned to floor). He said that is how you train a dog to stop “yipping” or “barking”.
This seems wrong. Is he an idiot?

July 5, 2020You are the best dog trainer for training shy and fearful aggressive dog. I have a dog with very severe fearful aggression. I have watched all the clips and I can feel the relationship between me and my dog is getting better and better. Thank you so much, kikopup.

July 5, 2020Firstly, religious people, please excuse my 'tag'. I've had to add it after being impersonated by a spineless Christian troll for 2 years on 'Jesus is a Lie' vid, saying the vilest thing to others in my name, with the support of the majority of Christians there, so let him copy THAT.
Now, onto doggy matters. I brought home a trained 18 month old Rotti who hated having his collar grabbed without warning.
Yep, I learnt the hard way when I thought that I had his attention when I didn't (No, no bite. This Rotti was just very demonstrative & vocal when voicing his disaproval, lol)
With him, I learned to say his name & either call him to me or 'heel'. ONLY once I had eye contact would I then take his collar without issue.
A good tutorial kikopup. Clear, precise & easy to understand.
Just love the way your other dogs watch with interest without interrupting the lesson : )

July 5, 2020My dog will bolt if people chase her to grab her. I've seen some people grab her by her collar which she's fine with but if she doesn't know someone she won't let them grab her. They teach us this at obedience class, I don't always have time to train this with strangers. I guess I'd rather strangers don't grab my dog also. But she's always been fine with me 🙂

July 5, 2020How long per day would you suggest spending on training a specific task?
My pup is a bordercollie/husky and around 4 months old. I feel like I should be working with him more, but I've read a lot to keep things relatively short. He also gets distracted easily which makes things a bit hard..
Love you videos! Thank you!

July 5, 2020Hey can you help me teach my dog to sit, lay down, and stand on four legs? I use lure training but unless I have a treat she ignores me .
. she's okay with sitting without it but when I tell her to lay down she doesn't dp it unless I lure with food .. I saw your video of doing a spin but it's different with laying down ._.Whitney Brailsford
July 5, 2020Hey! LOVE your channel! This is completely unrelated to this video, but I wanted to ask on a recent video because I know you are more likely to see it. My husband and I just got a new puppy two weeks ago. She is a nine week old Australian shepherd, poodle mix! We LOVE her! Anyway, I watched a billion of your videos before we got her and now I'm going back and re watching the ones that I need right now. We have had so much success with your methods and it's fun to see her improving on things so well, but we are having one really bad issue and want a little help. I know that if we just know how to work through it and work on it over and over we can be successful with time. Our little Phoebe gets SO hyper a few times a day and LUNGES and latches on to our legs and it HURTS. We have been using the interrupter method and have her sit and give her a treat, but sometimes we don't have a treat on hand, or she is too amped up to respond. I've even done training session where I set up the scenario and get her into a calm behavior and reward her for not lunging, but sometimes she's out of control. We take her out for exercise about three times a day (in three feet of snow and freezing weather) and throw toys for her a ton inside so I'm hoping she gets enough exercise. She also does similar things with biting and going crazing lunging out our hands if they are anywhere near her during this hyperactive time. She's an AWESOME puppy and we know this is normal puppy behavior, we just want to make sure we are addressing it quickly. Oh and don't worry, we have a VERY firm rule of no puppy intimidation in our house. We always try our very best to stay calm and use positive reinforcement. I loved your advice on how it will help practice patience with people haha! So true! The last two week have been so fun with training, it't just all new and we want to make sure we are utilizing our puppies brains properly since we know she's a smarty and all dogs deserve to be treated like our best friends! Your advice (or a video addressing this issue, unless you have one that I haven't seen) would be amazing! Thanks!

July 5, 2020Hi Emily,
I'm not sure if you'll reply to this due to receiving alot of messages per day but I was wondering what advice you could give me about dogs who have an immense preydrive. I myself have a 10 mnths old Podenco rescue & he's is so preydriven towards cats & it has come to the point where he gets frustrated (for not being able to chase the cat) & he starts attacking me & my boyfriend. To be honest I'm getting a bit desperate because of the attacking part, as his behaviour is getting out of control.
So what is the best thing for us to do now?
I'm starting today with teaching him to 'leave it' but how can I train this towards cats as they usually flee and he goes bonkers when they do?
Thank you for your time to read this & maybe even reply 🙂
Ps. if anyone else has tips on how I can teach my Podenco to behave around cats & tone down his preydrive, please feel free to reply to this comment, thank you!

July 5, 2020This is a great video, it had never occurred to me that this is a behaviour I could CC. Do you think it would decrease leash aggression (I have a dog that if grabbed by the collar around other dogs, she gets growly) or would I need another resource for that? Since most pressure around her neck makes her anxious I'll be doing this anyway

July 5, 2020Have you ever done a video working on the speed at which the dog (4 .5 month old retriever in my case) sits and drops? Our little Golden will do it, but only after 10-20 seconds after being told and only does it near-instantly with a treat (and no other stimulus – on walks at a kerb she still takes aaaages to sit with her knowing a treat is coming.

July 5, 2020Love your channel. I am a forensic psychologist/criminologist & I am a hard core behaviorist. I had a working dog (full sized Spitz) back in college. I had a great time training her & learning the basics of reinforcements. She was a great dog & had a good long life 3/15/79 – 2/2/98 and I was heartbroken when she passed.
After that I became a people trainer. I forgot how rewarding it is having a great dog in my life. lol Unlike inmates, dogs actually want to please you. Anyways, I first saw your vids about 6 months ago & it reminded me of the great times with my old dog. That got the wheels turning. About two months later my friend's daughter called. She remembered "that cool fluffy white dog I had that did all the tricks" and wondered if I wanted one of her German Shepard puppies. I couldn't say no. Now we are having a great time with a new puppy. While I am familiar with behaviorist techniques, the application is different with a dog & I forgot lots of stuff since my last dog. My partner & I have found your videos very helpful in getting us back up to speed on training. The new pup has all the basics down, except she still likes to jump up when excited, and I have taught her a few funny routines.

July 5, 2020Lumos is so precious! I love how he offered that little pivot for you! 😀
This is such a great topic and I wish I had known to teach this 4 years ago when I first got Zoe. She didn't like having her collar grabbed back then and she hated being led anywhere. I figured out very quickly that I needed to train it and now she's fine. Thank you for making this!

July 5, 2020I have learned so much from your videos! I understood that i have to correct my thinking about dog training! I ´m very appreciate you free videos here on you tube. Our next rottweiler pup wil really benefit from it. I´m so excited to practise your methods with our nieuw pup.

July 5, 2020Thank you for this video! I was just looking for a good one on the collar grab for my friend and couldn't find one quite as I would have liked and now a few days later I find this in my subscription box! I find this one of the skills every dog should be taught even if you don't plan on teaching anything to your dog at all. Recall, collar grab and crate games are essential for each and every dog!

July 5, 2020Awesome! This is one of my favorite behaviors to teach! I actually made a video a few years ago showing some of the handling exercises I've done with my dog: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UDfVDlwSZk She does not like strangers, but turning the handling exercises into "tricks" has helped her interact more positively with others 🙂

July 5, 2020Thank you for continuing to make videos. We love each and every one.
I would love to know if you could apply a similar technique as in this video for getting comfortable with having paws handled?
My dog is totally fine with me handling his paws but when I've taken him to get his nails done by a stranger it can be a very stressful experience for him.
Thanks again
